Question: Career choices: How about Drafting?

I am looking at taking a two year long drafting course. It should teach me everything I need to know and they claim I'll be able to get a job right after I graduate.

It seems the median salary for beginning draftsmen is about $46K a year. Will I be able to live comfortable as a single person on that?

I live in West Virginia.

It all depends on how you draw and how you are able to offer the market what it wants. What I'm saying is that there is always someone needs something in the field of illustration, or to begin a quality that you do that, you just have to learn Corel and Adobe Illustrator because without these two programs, and, to say the least - no. Do not hope for a quick and big money, how you put so much work and effort you'll get.

Draft

I am glad to see young people knowing and focusing toward what they want. And with that said, I congratulate you on your choice of career. Hope the job kicks off really fast.
And when it comes to money, I think that $46k is more then enough per year for a single person to live a nice life. Maybe from time to time you will have to pay attention on your spendings, but I am most sure that you can have a decent lifestyle with that salary.
And if that is not enough for your lifestyle, you can always find some online job to get some more income.

You will be able to live well, why not. It's a bit to take in two years. I wish you from the bottom of my heart even more to earn, I think it will. just work and work and no lines of reasoning for concern.

It is very popular job. Good for you. 46K a year it is really good sum of money. You could live comfortably. I would buy more and more stuff that i need for work so i don't know is that included in price of the salary. but sure maybe with that job you can do more as a freelancer, and like that you can earn more money and maybe do both.

First, I have to congratulate you, it is a great choice. Like any other career, you need to get your skills right, and you have to be patient until success starts arriving. $46k sounds quite enough for a decent living.

That you can or can't live with that salary is solely dependent on you and the kinda lifestyle you decides to live. With a moderate and modest lifestyle, you can live comfortably on peace and also, you can be doing your job online as a freelancer and get extra money into your pocket.

Specialty?

Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 21:18

Depending on what is your specialty in drafting. I notice that some people tend to concentrate in one field such as machinery, architecture, geology, interior design, etc. And once they are stick to it or find their niche, they tend to not move to other sector due to their interest.

I found that most people depend too much on their CAD software and they forget the essence of drafting. Of course computer can solve your mathematical issue pretty quick, but if you see when people draw or draft with their own hand and calculate everything manually, you start appreciate those efforts.

I don't know the prospect of drafter in West Virginia at this moment. And whether you can live with $46K a year depends on your lifestyle. But with the advancement of technology, you could take a drafting job from anywhere in the world as a freelancer.
